Definition of 'Stephen Miran'

Stephen Ira Miran, born in June 1983 in Pearl River, New York, is an American economist who has held significant positions in the U.S. government.

His educational background includes a bachelor's degree in economics, philosophy, and mathematics from Boston University, which he graduated from summa cum laude. He then earned a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 2010.

Miran's career includes both private sector and government roles. He spent a decade in financial markets, working as an analyst at Lily Pond Capital Management and Fidelity Investments, and as a portfolio manager and head of macroeconomic strategy at Sovarnum Capital. He also co-founded the asset management firm Amberwave Partners and was a senior strategist at Hudson Bay Capital Management and a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute.

In government, Miran was a senior advisor for economic policy at the U.S. Department of the Treasury from 2020 to 2021, where he helped with fiscal support programs during the pandemic recession, including the Paycheck Protection Program. For his contributions, he received the Treasury award for exceptional service. He later served as the 32nd Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers from March to September 2025.

In September 2025, he was confirmed by the Senate as a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. He is the first person to concurrently serve in the federal executive branch and on the Federal Reserve Board since the 1930s.

Miran's work and economic views have been published in academic journals and news media, including The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, and the Financial Times. He is known for his work on trade, tariffs, and Treasury issuance. He developed the Trump administration's tariff policy and has argued that broad levies do not cause inflation. He has also been a critic of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy.
