Definition of 'Anna Paulson'
Anna Paulson is an American economist who, as of July 1, 2025, is the 12th president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. In this position, she is a member of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which is responsible for formulating the nation's monetary policy.
Before taking on her role at the Philadelphia Fed, Paulson served as the executive vice president and director of research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, a position she held since 2019. She joined the Chicago Fed as an economist in 2001 and was later promoted to vice president in the Financial Markets Group in 2009. Prior to her time at the Chicago Fed, she was an assistant professor of finance at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University.
Paulson's research focuses on how households and firms handle financial risks and incomplete financial markets, as well as how economic events and institutions influence household financial decisions. Her work has been published in scholarly journals such as the Journal of Political Economy and the Review of Financial Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College. She is a past board member of the Western Economic Association International and a member of the American Economic Association's Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession.
